I had to post an update on my geekery because these days I LOVE being a Geek! When I was at school, being a geek’ or nerd’ was a bad thing but not now.

I think we have taken the word and made it our own it is empowering now, and moreso it relates to technical ability. I’ve had a boost in my geekery in recent years, having tied in all my online activity across multiple social channels, but also with the technical things I’ve learned for how to do certain things with my blog, apps and plugins.
Let me fill you in¦
A couple of I returned to college to complete a part time course in Photoshop techniques taking me ‘back to school’! I learned more in just a few short lessons than I did in the few years preceeding that of dabbling with Photoshop and trying to figure it out for myself. It is a really difficult package to learn and there are so many tools and techniques, as well as terms that are unfamiliar (would you know what an elliptical marquee was if you weren’t a Photoshop whizz?) Well I do now!!
I have to say I really enjoyed being a student again albeit for just one afternoon a week. I was the class swot – always getting a seat at the front and scribbling notes throughout the lesson. I appreciate education so much more now that I’m older but you can’t put an old head on young shoulders!
But the geekery doesn’t stop there. I am weaving a geeky web with all my social media accounts too. I have had Instagram Pinterest G+ Facebook YouTube and Twitter for years now and other than cross promoting my blog posts on Twitter and Facebook in status updates, my social networks operated independently of each other. I’d put a link in each profile to show people what my blog is about and where to find it, but the actual content for Instagram was just what I did for Instagram and the content on Pinterest was just what I did on Pinterest.
Not any more!
These days I am using my Instagram feed to showcase what is on the blog that day. It means I have to be even more organised, and know what I have publishing and when, but I will save a photo taken from when I was in the blog post creation stage and make sure I post it to Instagram on the day it goes live, with a link to that post!
Plus I optimised my blog for mobile devices, so when you read on your phone or tablet, you’ll see an easier to read and navigate blog, and not just a scaled down version of the desktop site! This also makes more search engine friendly too. I wonder if my non-blogging friends and readers will know what a big deal this is, but trust me, it is!
I’m really proud of how my technical skills have grown from the days when I started out using a WYSIWYG editor (what you see is what you get) and now I am dealing with code! A few I was afraid to update my plugins in case I broke’ something but the more you try, the more you can do, and this online world of ours is helping me and mothers like me to have a career and earn money whilst being at home to look after our kids. You can’t get much better than that.
I will be a lifelong learner, I love to develop new skills – it’s just a shame that as a work at home mother, I won’t get a graduation – I so enjoyed my last one!!
