Remain or Leave has been a key question lately and when it comes to the subject of your summer holiday, I can highly advocate ‘remain’ in the UK for a staycation at home!
As a Yorkshire girl I am fortunate to live in this glorious county – we have something for everyone on our doorstep, whether you are outdoorsy, sporty, thrill seeking or prefer the luxurious things in life. Yorkshire has it all.
I’d like to share with you some of my Yorkshire picks for a family break in the UK…
If you love a beach holiday, you will find it in Yorkshire! Believe it or not, Yorkshire is probably best known for its iconic moors and rolling green landscape but we have some picturesque sandy and pebble beaches here too!
Some of the most popular family beaches are in Bridlington, Scarborough, Filey and Whitby along the east coast but there are also lesser known but equally beautiful beaches in Robin Hoods Bay and Saltburn which is also popular with surfers.
Outdoorsy types head to Yorkshire for long, rambling walks across the dales and scenic hikes but those up for a challenge and charity fundraisers can be found completing the ‘Three Peaks Challenge‘, scaling the hills in the Pennine range in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. This 24 mile long route takes you up 5200ft and those who complete the challenge get a medal afterwards, along with some pretty photography and probably a blister or two!
If another type of high octane adventure is more your thing, visit Aerial Extreme – a high ropes adventure course in Bedale – the first high wire course from this company in the UK (they now have 5 locations!) You can amaze yourself on a speedy zippier, a mid-air jump or by scaling a gravity defying climbing wall, before heading back to your cottage for a warming pot of Yorkshire Tea!
Lovers of history and culture will be at home in York – a medieval city with an impressive cathedral, York Minster. This walled city was founded by the ancient Romans and is home to many Roman relics. It is an area of great natural beauty combined with a bustling centre for those who love shopping!
…And if shopping and a luxury lifestyle is up your street, head to the cosmopolitan city of Leeds. Having undergone a massive regeneration over the last 20 years, Leeds now hosts some of the finest shops and restaurants in the UK.

This vibrant metropolis is also steeped in significant architectural landmarks, making it a treat visually as much as it is experientially.
You can stay at a holiday cottage in Harrogate and still be only a 40 minute drive to the centre of Leeds. Harrogate is another attractive shopping city with a rich heritage that is home to the Harrogate Baths – a Turkish baths and health spa which has been open for more than a century.
cottages.com has beautiful holiday cottages to rent in all these Yorkshire locations as well as destinations nationwide. You can search their website to select properties by a grade rating (like a ‘star’ rating) but also by the number of bedrooms or number of bathrooms.
