Last weekend I was in Birmingham to watch the first leg of the Davis Cup – this is the number one event in men’s tennis – like the World Cup of tennis!
I watched brothers Andy and Jamie Murray win the first round against Japan in the doubles tournament, and the atmosphere in the arena was electric. Here’s a few clips I shot of the famous Murray brothers who were applauded like celebrities when they came on court.
But no matter how talented these men are or the hours and dedication they’ve put into their tennis over the years, the person I wanted to see most was the winning mama – Judy Murray!
As any mother knows, you want your child to do well in whatever career they choose and if they have talent you want to nurture and develop that skill. Much praise and adulation has been directed at Andy Murray and his ability is commented on by the TV pundits, but no mention is ever made of the mother and the hours of dedication she has put into her boys. So this post is dedicated to her and all the other winning mamas out there who do a stellar job looking after their kids.
In Judy’s case, there will be the hours of training she’d had to sit through and analyse whilst her boys developed their game. The role as ‘Mum’s taxi’ in getting them to and from games and training. The early starts, the late nights – not for a pursuit of her own but in dedication to her sons. The special diet she has inevitably had to produce and consume herself so the whole family was eating healthily. The discipline of getting on with the job at hand and smiling even when all she may have wanted to do was shut the door and unplug the phone.
We may not be bringing up Wimbledon champions in our homes but we are all doing a worthy job in providing safe, secure, loving homes for our kids, and as we’ve just celebrated Mother’s Day in the UK I hope that all the mothers out there were thoroughly pampered and enjoyed their special day with their family.
I never did get to see Judy Murray at the arena – I was scouring the crowd but I couldn’t see her. Maybe she was on ‘Grandma duty’ with Andy Murray’s new baby son. But wherever she was, I bet she was proud to see her sons win this round of the Davis Cup – but even had they lost, she’d no doubt have been there to pick up the pieces, because that’s what us mothers do. Celebrate their wins, soothe their losses and are always there to love and support them.
So I spent my Mother’s Day enjoying a weekend in Birmingham at this event then having a nice meal out too. There’s no-one I’d rather be than ‘Mum’ to my two kids – loving and supporting them in whatever they do and I’m blessed to know they love and support me too. What did you do on Mother’s Day?
